On Thursday 20th July, sixth form students of Abbeyfield School undergoing their first year of A-Level studies were all set to experience a taste of what life is truly like in the ‘real world’; preparing them for new scenarios post-pupil life.
Workshops included interview situations with representatives from local businesses, highlighting key employability skills and delivering presentations on topical subjects. This included a talk by our very own Matthew Pentecost, who is currently undergoing training at the St. James’s Place Academy and is set to join Berkley Square Private Clients (Senior Partner Practice of St. James’s Place) in Chippenham later on this year.
Matthew first embarked on a career in financial services fifteen years ago and is both CeMap and CeFap qualified. His extensive experience in financial services and the ever-changing industry allowed him to deliver a key presentation at a pivotal time for the students; offering an insight into key subjects that could help guide them to the next stage of their lives such as budgeting for University, understanding tax and national insurance, pensions, money management and credit ratings.
Matthew’s passion to pass on his knowledge to the budding young advisers and accountants of the future was recently reignited after meeting the Headteacher of Abbeyfield School, Mr Ian Tucker, at a local networking breakfast.
"The pupils really got involved in the day and it was interesting to discuss the prospect of retirement and planning for the future fiscally with 16 year olds. Personally, I believe it is so important for everyone to have financial advice especially when you’re young, so you can plan for the future.”
